The United States National Monuments proudly presents Muir Woods National Monument administered through the National Park Service. The name comes from the naturalist John Muir. It is situated in Mount Tamalpais, southwestern Marin County, San Francisco, California. The Woods is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is 12 miles north of San Francisco that protects 554 acres, including 240 acres of old-growth coastal redwood.

Nature and Science
Muir Woods National Monument has an astounding variety of fauna and flora that can be a bit overwhelming at times but difficult in other instances. The redwoods dominate the landscape, but Steller’s Jay often steals the show. Beautiful ladybugs swarm around the thousands of old horsetail ferns as the banana snail captivates in a single. Plants adjust to the low-level floor of the forest, and the entire living and animal community swarms within the canopy above our heads.
