Historically referred to as Japanese Town or “Nihonmachi,” it is a neighborhood located in the Western Addition district of San Francisco, California. Japantown settles to about six city blocks and is considered one of the largest and oldest ethnic enclaves in the United States. The focal point of Japantown is the Japan Center which opened in 1968, and it has become the site of three Japanese-oriented shopping centers. The San Francisco Peace Pagoda is also located at Japan Center, a five-tiered concrete stupa designed by Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi.
San Francisco’s Japantown is one of the only remaining three Japantowns in the US. It has been first settled during the early 1860s for the generations of Japanese immigrants and their descendants that have kept alive the arts and culture scene of Japan. You will find world-renowned artists, cultural cuisines, performers, and Japanese items for sale.
Peace Pagoda
This historical monument was designed and inspired by a set of round pagodas in Jpan’s then-capital city, Nara. This landmark was donated to Japantown as a gesture of generosity by the beautiful city of Osaka, also San Francisco’s sister city, in 1968.
