How was it Made?
Four decades from railroad entrepreneur Charles C. Crocker’s call to take action on bridge construction across Golden GateStrait in 1872. The structural engineer and editor of the newspaper, James H. August 1919, when the city officials had officially demanded that O’Shaughnessy study the possibility of building a bridge over the Golden Gate Strait. O’Shaughnessy began to consult with several engineers from all over the United States to discuss the feasibility and the cost of constructing a bridge across the water bodies. In his discussions, most of them believed that the cost of a bridge could be more than $100 million and could not be constructed. However, it wasn’t till Joseph Baermann Strauss came forward and claimed that the bridge was not only feasible; however, it could be constructed for between $25 and $30 million.
On the 28th of June, 1921, Strauss submitted his first drawings for review by O’Shaughnessy and Edward Rainey, the secretary of the mayor of San Francisco, Hon. James Rolph. The estimated cost for his original design, an asymmetrical cantilever-suspension hybrid span, was less than expected, which was $17 million.
It took him one year and a half before he could make the cantilever suspension hybrid design to the general public. At the time, Strauss was promoting the brilliant idea of the bridge by using his original design for the Northern California communities. Strauss devoted himself to convincing leaders in the community that his idea was not only feasible but could also be funded by toll revenue in its entirety.
