Presidio was a military reserve since its founding in 1776. Presidio was the first northernmost outpost of colonial authority within the New World. The longest-garrisoned outpost in the United States and was the longest-running post in its time in the American West. It played a significant part in the Spanish discovery and colonization of borderlands. Mexico’s control over this region stretched across Alta, California to Texas, and the involvement of the United States not only during the expansion of the frontier but also saw major conflict in the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848.
